The Paul Melniczek Halloween Book Extravaganza part 1

When do you start enjoying your yearly Halloween reading?  Some of you might say that you never stop, to which I say kudos!  But if you are anything like me, even through the year round Halloween festivities, you have some classics that you wouldn't dare sully with the taint of any season other than autumn.  These are the tomes that must be read only when the nights become darker, the leaves are blowing, and the cider is flowing!  Does that Halloween reading list of yours contain anything by Paul Melniczek, cause if it doesn't then it would be an honor to introduce you to some of the most wonderful seasonal reading treats you will lay your eyes upon.  And if you have already read any of Mr. Melniczek's Halloween books than you already know how important these are to seasonal reading.  First on the list we have an anthology that is sure to turn your Halloween season into the darkest of seasons.  A Haunted Halloween is one of those anthologies that takes Halloween and ties it into each of the tales told in the book, but unlike other anthologies that attempt this tie in, these tales actually bleed Halloween!  Each and every tale in A Haunted Halloween has that Halloween flair that shines through with ease as only someone with as much love for the holiday as Melniczek can make happen!  This book is easily a must purchase for those that wish to add it to their list of Halloween "must-reads".  A Haunted Halloween contains 11 stories and 4 pieces of artwork.  The book also has a very nice wrap around cover that when opened creates one larger piece of artwork!

The second story that Mr. Melniczek has cooked up for Halloween is "Mischief Night".  I haven't finished this one yet but am currently in the process and will grade it once I have completed it.  If you want a review of sorts though, all you need to do is turn to the back of the book where you will find a quote from Al Sarrantonio, author of the Orangefield Cycle - "Paul Melniczek writes about Halloween as if it's his birthday, Christmas and the Fourth of July all rolled up into one!"  Do you really even my review after reading that?  Here is the cover for "Mischief Night"

The wait is over.......for real this time!

T-minus 1 day ghouls!!!! Finally this is really happening, a real life, honest to goodness regularly scheduled feature on HalloweenOverkill. That's right "Are You Afraid of the Blog?" will be a recurring (seriously, why do I always have the urge to type reOccuring?) feature on the blog, twice a week, every week.  This won't just be recaps of the t.v. episodes either.  OHHHHH NOOOOOOO, I will be adding some HalloweenOverkill flair to each post with some humor and other trivial knowledge type information.  There will also be some special posts that will sneak their way between the regular posts.  What kind of special posts you ask?  Well keep in mind it wasn't just a show, but a book series, and even a video game!  Yes, you read that correctly, the very rare and elusive "Are You Afraid of the Dark?: The Tale of Orpheo's Curse" for the p.c. will be featured and reviewed.  I really hope everyone embraces this feature and loves it as much as I will love bringing it to you. AYAOTD was something that I looked forward to every single weekend as a child and because of my love for the show it left me with very fond memories of watching it with my younger sister and whoever was babysitting us at the time.  I remember waiting for the week to end and literally sitting in my living room counting down the hours until SNICK would begin. I would patiently watch Clarissa Explains it all, Roundhouse, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, The Ren and Stimpy Show, and whatever else would be shown until that glorious moment when the creepy AYAOTD theme would pop into the television speakers. Seriously though, I really did and still love this show and have a genuine passion for it, (aren't we all passionate about the awesomeness of our childhood?) and I hope you all enjoy this feature and maybe, just maybe I can rekindle your childhood memories and bring you back to the better days.

A Freakish Find!!!

 

Yesterday I had the luck, no the HONOR, of finding what may be the greatest book in my personal library.  I found the ever elusive "Rogue Leaders" The story of LucasArts!!!  This has been one of the items in my ever growing quest of things I must own before I kick the bucket.  So here's the short story detailing my discovery of this amazing piece of loot.  My wife and I made a quick trip to our favorite book store, (one that you've seen mentioned on this site many o' times) "Half Price Books" just to check their clearance section for any "Goosebumps" books. (We're trying to collect them all for our future zombies)  Well I was in luck as they had recently added two new "Goosebumps" books to the clearance section, and ones that I currently didn't have at that!  After my wife was done perusing her section of the store we headed to the front, and as I was checking out their amazingly shitty horror DVD section my eyes were magnetically drawn to the bottom of the "rack of shit" placed precariously at the front door.  I think the purpose of this specific shelf was for the absolute garbage they were hoping people would pick up as impulse buys on their way out.  After focusing on this crazy lenticular cover that caught my eye, it was clear to me that I was staring at not only Darth Vader but the Purple Tentacle on the cover of this large coffee table style book on the bottom row. (If you don't know who Purple Tentacle is please refrain from ever reading this blog again haha)  As I picked it up I realized exactly what I had in my hands and I immediately looked over at my wife who actually smiled because of the glow that was emanating off of my face.  I proudly walked up to the cashier and placed it on the counter ever so delicately and proceeded to pay for this monumental purchase.  (This thing was even still shrink wrapped, that's how nice of condition it was in!)

 

The book itself encompasses the entire history of the greatest video game company on the planet.  From the very first day up until last year, this book talks about not just the history of the company itself but the history of every single one of their games including ones that never actually made it onto store shelves.

If you are a fan at all of classic point&click adventure games then you need to pick this up and read about the godfather of all adventure video games.  By the way the book does include a vast wealth of knowledge on my favorite video game franchise of all time "Monkey Island" and my second favorite computer game of all time "Grim Fandango".  (of which I own both still with the original packaging!)  Part of the greatness of this find isn't the rarity of the book but the price at which I got it for.  The book lists at $60.00 because of it's style, (the gigantic hardcover coffee table style book) but if you look on amazon you'll find a discount of about fifteen dollars, meaning you'll shell out about $45.00 for the book still.  (60 dollars is well worth it by the way!)  The awesome part is that I only paid a whopping $6.98!!!  HAHA read it and weep suckers!!!

Saved the best for last!  Yup that last pic features my favorite videogame character of all time, Guybrush Threepwood might pirate!!!  Oh and by the way, like I said at the beginning, those aren't four different covers, they are all on the cover.  Depending on what angle you hold the cover it changes into all four of the characters featured above.  All in all a pretty damned respectable find wouldn't ya say?

Half-Price Horror (New HalloweenOverkill feature)....

Since I frequent my local Half Price Books about every other day, I figured I'd start sharing the treasures I find in the form of book reviews.  The cool thing about these books is that they are a bit older, so you may see something you used to have but was either lost to the depths of the basement, or your parents threw it away.  Maybe one of these reviews will spark an interest in hunting down one of these so called "treasures" you used to own.  I would also like to point out how amazing horror book covers were in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. (keep an eye out for some awesome ones coming soon!) 
First off in the Half-Price Horror Book Review series is "The Nightmare Man" by, Tessa Krailing.  "The Nightmare Man" has the stamp of being a book in the Point Horror Series, which were just randomly released horror books with no on-going continuity or anything, however I don't see it listed on the wikipedia page for Point Horror. (Update: the wikipedia page says the list is incomplete so maybe I should it to the list)  Here is the summary from the back of the book: " He's waiting........ Alex has seen that shadowy figure before-in bad dreams.  But now that his family has moved into creepy old End House, Alex isn't dreaming any more.  Now Alex knows that the dream is coming true.  The nightmare man is real.  And he wants Alex to share the nightmare......." (I'd like to have my editor check their grammar, haha)
The summary above is in no way shape or form indicative of the book itself.  I'm not even sure where to begin with reviewing this thing.  The first chapter actually started off with Alex seeing the nightmare man in the middle of woods, which gave me the idea that this book was going to be incredibly creepy.  I was wrong.  Eventually Alex sees the nightmare man one more, yes, you heard me right, ONE, more time before the climax of the book.  After the forest scene which introduces us to Alex and his buddy, Alex gets word that he is moving into a new house.  The house that Alex and family move into is a house that actually belonged to one of the criminals that Alex's dad incarcerated (Alex's dad was a cop).  The weird thing is, this criminal who was also known as the The Raven, tried to kill Alex's dad.  So the question becomes why would this criminal leave the house to the Mackay family (Alex's family)?  Eventually a lodger moves into the house with the family which sets off some super creepy child stalker tones within the book. (If I am writing this review as if I have no formal writing experience, it is because I can't actually write coherently about something that was written so incoherently.  As disjointed and abrupt as the sentences are in my review, the chapters in this book are ten times worse than that)  Is there a connection between the deceased criminal "The Raven", The nightmare man, and the mysterious lodger?  You'll have to read to find out, and if you happen to discern whether or not there is a connection let me know because what I'm assuming was supposed to be the big reveal or plot twist at the end was so obvious that it actually confused me a little bit.  Was the rest of the book just one big red herring or what?  There were some creepy parts in the book, like the first two encounters with "The Nightmare Man" and some of the interactions with the mysterious lodger, however it felt like most of the book was written just to shoehorn this creepy nightmare man vision into the story.  In the end the book ended up just being a basic heist story.  (this is not spoiling anything trust me, I'm still not even sure if I'm describing this right)  I really thought this book had potential after reading the back and seeing the cover, however it flat out failed in my eyes.  I never write an author off after just one poor outing so I will definitely pick up at least one more of  Tessa Krailing's books just to see if it is any better but for now I'm going to go ahead and give this 1 Jolly Jack-O-Lantern out of 5.

Anybody like to read?

So I was thinking something fun we could all do during these long, cold, dark, winter nights was to have one of those fancy reading adventures? Any takers? If you don't know what it is, don't worry I didn't either until last week. How it works is I'll put up a bunch of categories for different themes on books to read such as; read a book by an author that starts with the letter b, read a book that takes place on mars, read a book with an animal as the main character, so on and so on. I see these sort of things taking place across many a literary blogs and forums and I thought it might be fun for us to participate in our own. Let me know if this is something any of you ghouls would be interested in and I'll whip up some categories tonight or tomorrow.

New Discworld novel!!!!!

That's right ghouls, you heard it here first. (right?)  I don't care if it's horror related or not I have to give Sir Terry Pratchett a big shout out anytime he has something new coming out.  That time is now!  Coming in September is Terry's new Discworld novel, "I Shall Wear Midnight".  This book falls into the Tiffany Aching Adventures category but is still no less a novel of Discworld.  In Short, Discworld is a flat planet that sits on the back's of four great elephants that are standing on the back of the giant turtle Great A'Tuin.  Sounds amazing right?  Well it is.  If you haven't read any of the Discworld novels head over to your local bookstore and start with, "The Color of Magic" the first of the Discworld novels.  Anyways here are two pieces of artwork (U.K. artwork & U.S. artwork?) and the trailer for the new book.

EDIT-Not quite sure why the trailer says February, but his website and amazon both say September.  Oh well I guess we'll have to play the waiting game for the next month to find out.

A Gathering of Crows review

Well I have finally got back into reading mode after all the craziness of moving, and I must say my first trip back into the world of literature was a pretty good one. I just finished reading Brian Keene's "A Gathering of Crows" and think it is definitely a book you should be going out to your local Borders Book Store to pick up. Here is the lowdown on the book as featured on the back of the title:
"Brinkley Springs is a quiet little town. Some say the town is dying. They don't know how right they are. Five mysterious figures are about to pay a little visit to Brinkley Springs. They have existed for centuries, emerging from the shadows only to destroy, to kill, to feed. They bring with them terror and carnage, and leave death and blood in their wake. As the night wears on, Brinkley Springs will be quiet no longer. Screams will break the silence. But when the sun rises again, will there be anyone left to hear?"
To tell you any more about the story would be a disservice to Brian Keene. In "A Gathering of Crows" you will learn a little bit more about Keene's labyrinth mythos--a theme that can be found in most of his novels from "The Rising" onward--including how the labyrinth works and much more about the 13, the denizens that use the labyrinth to sometimes inhabit our world. If you don't know what I'm talking about in regards to the labyrinth and the 13 go back and read all of his recent paperbacks or if you haven't read them at all go back to "The Rising" and start now. But if you do know what I'm talking about in regards to this overarching mythology then you will also find some new surprises lurking within, such as a surprise visit to one of the 13's home worlds, and a visit to the labyrinth itself.  This is a tale that encompasses things on a much more cosmic scale than some of the other books. This is not to say that you have to know about the labyrinth or the 13s to enjoy this book, since each of Keene's novels is a "stand-alone" that tells its own tale and doesn't require any prior knowledge of the overall mythology. Needless to say I think this book gives "The Rising" & "City of the Dead" a run for their money as far as being Brian Keene's most exciting piece of fiction yet!
I am giving this book 4 and 1/2 Jolly Jack-O-Lanterns out of 5.

Annual 4th of July Scavenger Hunt and a lost treasure from my tomb of goodies!

Happy 4th of July!  I'd like to first thank everything and everyone that makes this country so great, including all the troops who risk their lives everyday to uphold our beliefs and the freedom we sometimes take for granted.

So before we get to the contest I'd like to share something I found in my closet yesterday while packing up for the move to PA. I believe most of you share my fondness of Adrienne Barbeau, the legend from such classics as The Fog, Swamp Thing, and Creepshow! Well as I was packing up my book collection I found the book featured above, Vampyres of Hollywood, which was co-written by Adrienne and Michael Scott.  The book is a tale of murder and mystery involving the deaths of several people connected to a Hollywood scream queen who also happens to be a 500 year old vampire.  I took a second to flip open the cover and guess what I found? An aunthentic autograph from Adrienne Barbeau herself!!!

This must have been one of those copies that Borders Books sometimes has hidden on their shelves that has been actually autographed by the authors. So unbeknownst to me I was the owner of an autographed copy of Adrienne's book. Crazy the things you find when cleaning or packing up your apartment.

Horror Purchase of the Week

Got the new Horrorhound today and an old school classic.  I thought it would be fun to do some old school reviews of books from my youth, so I picked up Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask, by R.L. Stine.  I'm sure the book will not take more than an hour to read so I should have a review up very shortly.

This week I found Extreme Halloween written by Tom Nardone in the bargain bin at Borders for $1.50. How, you may ask, was it that cheap?  Well all bargain bin books were 25% off this week and they were buy 1 get 1 free. The book is a nice little collection of extreme ways to decorate your yard and also contains extreme party decorations and ideas (check out a few of my favorites: how to make your own fake blood and fake blood on a budget, Halloween hangman, anatomically correct invitations, and the haunted lavatory [an amazing set of tricks to creep out your bathroom for your Halloween party]).  The great thing about the book is that, while you may not follow the author's exact instructions, the book is so chock full of projects that you may just use his ideas as inspiration for your own little Halloween projects.  Sir Nardone has also authored Extreme Pumpkins: Diabolical Do-It-Yourself Designs to Amuse Your Friends and Scare Your Neighbors, and Extreme Pumpkins II: Take Back Halloween and Freak Out a Few More Neighbors.  The sweet thing about the author is that he lives in my home town, Detroit (at least he did at the time of publishing this book)! I'd like to mention two new horror related comic books that I picked up this week.  The first one was actually suggested to me by my lovely wife.  The title is iZombie, and it revolves around Gwen who is a new zombie but this comic has a twist to it.  Without spoiling too much lets just say Gwen has to eat one fresh brain a month lest she becomes a more generic type zombie.  After she eats her monthly cuisine.... well I'll let you read to see what happens to her.  This one starts off kind of slow but finds itself by the end of the book and I fully expect this title to be a must purchase every issue.  Vertigo published I,Zombie, which is DC comic's mature line of comic books.  Visit Vertigo by clicking the link.

The second title I picked up this week was Bram Stoker's: Death Ship, the Last Voyage of the Demeter.  Yup that's right folks this comic tells the untold story of the Russian ship that transported Dracula from Transylvania to England.  The comic starts off with the loading of the precious cargo and quickly moves to the first part of the voyage at sea where several strange occurrences and sightings begin to happen on the Demeter.  Death Ship issue 1 was fairly short but did what it intended to do and that was set up this harrowing horror adventure and begin the tale of Dracula's transport on the Demeter.  This one was published by IDW, which you can visit by clicking the link.

Horror purchase of the week

So I know you should "Never judge a book by its cover."  Blah blah blah, heard it a million times before and while it's normally not a bad cliche to actually listen to, this cover spoke to me.  It said "Please buy me young sir I will not let you down I promise."  Right.  Anyways, I thought the cover was beautiful so I'm gonna give it a shot.  A review will follow eventually.  If you have read it or want to please comment below.
